to preach with ease to himself, and to the edification of his hearers. He is still able, annually, to act as chaplain to the Cincinnati Society in Boston, and within the past year has preached in the Capitol at Washington, in Congress Hall.

CHILDREN OF REV. DAVID SMITH, D. D.

I. DAVID MARSH, the son of his first wife, BETSEY MARSH, graduated at Yale College, 1811; studied Theology at Andover; was settled in the ministry at Lewiston, New York; now resides in Princeton, New Jersey.

II. CATHARINE, the eldest daughter of Rev. DAVID and CATHARINE GOODRICH SMITH; married Hon. Henry L. Ellsworth.

III. ELIZUR GOODRICH, graduated at Yale College; studied Theology; was settled at Ogdensburgh, New York; married ADELINE DENNY, daughter of Col. Thomas Denny of Leicester, Massachusetts, September 13, 1830, who died at Ogdensburgh, New York, November 4, 1831. Their son, CHAUNCY GOODRICH, died at two years of age. He married for his second wife, SuSAN WADSWORTH, daughter of John Wadsworth, Esq., of the city of New York. Their children were, 1. GOODRICH WADSWORTH, who died about a year old; 2. WILLIAM MURRAY, who died July, 1854, when preparing for college, aged 14 years.

IV. ELIZABETH MARSH, the second daughter.

V. CHAUNCY GOODRICH, who was born October 17, 1807, and died September 27, 1825.

VI. SIMEON PARSONS, born July 31, 1809; married HETTY HOSFORD SMITH, daughter of WALTER D. SMITH, Esq., January 27, 1833, who died January 23, 1840. She left one daughter, HETTY HOSFORD. He married for his second wife, ELIZA VAN NESS LYLE, June 27, 1842. He died February 6, 1848. Their children were, 1. HENRY LYLE, preparing for College; 2. CATHARINE, deceased; 3. GERTRUDE Van Ness.

VII. GUSTAVUS WALTER, who was born June 16, 1815, and died at Lafayette, Indiana, August 8, 1840.

NATHANIEL CHAUNCY OF MIDDLETOWN.

NATHANIEL CHAUNCY of Middletown, Connecticut, second son of Rev. Nathaniel and Sarah Chauncy of Durham, was born in

Durham, January 21st, 1720; was graduated at Yale College, 1740. He resided at Middletown Upper Houses, now called Cromwell, where he was much respected, as a gentleman of strong good sense, of much general information, and of strict integrity. He was in the commission of the peace when the county was formed, and continued to be so until his death, September 3, 1798, in the 79th year of his age.

He married, for his first wife, January 10, 1750, MARY STOCKING of Middletown, who was born December 7, 1721, and died March 9, 1774. His second wife was Mrs. SUSANNAH GILBERT of Hebron, who was married 1775, and died 1795.

THE CHILDREN OF NATHANIEL AND MARY CHAUNCY.

I. JOHN STOCKING, born August 21, 1751. He was a lighthorseman in the American Army, and was killed by British cavalry, near the Schuylkill, below Philadelphia, after he had surrendered himself a prisoner, December 14, 1777.

II. SARAH, born March 25, 1753; married OLIVER STANLEY of Wallingford; died September 3, 1755. Their son, GEORGE WASHINGTON STANLEY, was born June 25, 1775. He was a lawyer of good reputation for many years, first at Wallingford, and then in Middletown. The last years of his life he spent in the Western country.

III. MARY, born Dec. 9, 1754. She married, 1st, THOMAS JOHNSON of Middletown, 1774, who died 1780; 2d, Rev. ELIJAH PARSONS of East Haddam, Nov. 5th, 1792. She died Sept. 30, 1812.

Rev. Mr. Parsons was born in Northampton, Mass.; graduated at Yale College in 1768; was a Dean scholar; studied Theology with Rev. Enoch Huntington of Middletown; was much respected in the ministry; was for some years a member of the Corporation of Yale College; was a good general scholar, and a sound theologian. He was one of the conductors of the Connecticut Evangelical Magazine, First Series, and contributed more or less to its pages. He was consistent and exemplary in his life, and died in the affections of his people. He died the 17th of January, 1827, in the 55th year of his ministry, and the 80th of his age. His first wife was ELIZABETH ROGERS of Boston. His

second wife was Mrs. MARY CHAUNCY JOHNSON; and his third wife was Miss MELISSENT SPENCER of East Haddam.

IV. ABIGAIL, born Sept. 15, 1756; married, 1, NORMAN MORRISON of Hartford, who died 1783; 2, CALEB BULL of Hartford, 1788. She died Sept. 30, 1799. NORMAN MORRISON, son of Abigail and Norman Morrison, and grandson of Nathaniel Chauncy, was born March 15, 1782, and died Feb. 10, 1790.

V. NATHANIEL, born May 12, 1758. He married ABIGAIL OLCOTT of Hartford, April 20, 1782, who died April 2, 1838. He died Nov. 20, 1825, aged 77.

VI. CATHARINE, born July 3, 1763; and died Nov. 12, 1763.

I. SARAH, born April, 1786; died, Hartford, March, 1842. II. JOHN STOCKING, born Jan. 12, 1784; died, February, 1784. III. MARY, born March 10, 1787; married ELIJAH ACKLEY of East Haddam, Conn., Feb. 22, 1807; died July 9, 1833, at Dover, Kentucky. Their children were,

1. NORMAN, born at East Haddam, Conn., May 12, 1809; married JANE ELIZABETH WATSON of Catskill, N. Y., 1839, and died at Rochester, 1842.

2. MARIETTA, born Feb. 11, 1814. Resides at Buffalo, N. Y. 3. JOHN, born Aug. 28, 1816; married MARY JANE MOORE, Nov. 19, 1838, and died at Pendleton, S. C., May 18, 1843. Their daughter Elizabeth was born at Rochester, N. Y., Sept. 17, 1839; died February 13, 1844.

4. ELIZABETH, born March 8, 1819; died the 18th of June, 1819.

5. ELIZABETH, born October 31, 1822; married ELIJAH ROBERTS, October 26, 1848. They reside in Buffalo, N. Y.

IV. MICHAEL, born April 10, 1789; married DOROTHY CONE of East Haddam, Dec. 22, 1813. He resides in Hartford.

V. CATHARINE, born July 23, 1791; married ANSON TREAT of Middletown, April 23, 1810; deceased.

THE CHILDREN OF ANSON AND CATHARINE TREAT.

1. EDWIN HENRY, born in Middletown, March 30, 1811; died 1811.

2. HENRY CHAUNCY, born December 27, 1812.

3. SUSAN AMELIA, born October 30, 1814.

VI. HENRY, born April 3, 1795; has been a merchant in Middletown; in Valparaiso, S. A., and in New York. He took a leading part in building the Panama Railroad.

He married LUCY ALSOP, daughter of Joseph Alsop of Middletown, September 26, 1820. Her mother was LUCY WHITTLESEY, daughter of Chauncy Whittlesey, Esq., of Middletown, who was the son of Rev. CHAUNCY WHITTLESEY of New Haven, whose mother was SARAH CHAUNCY, wife of Rev. Samuel Whittlesey of Wallingford, and daughter of Rev. NATHANIEL CHAUNCY of Hatfield, the ancestor of Mr. Henry Chauncy, her husband.

Mrs. Chauncy exhibited in rare combination those virtues and graces which the heart looks for in woman. The courtesies of life she exhibited with cordiality and kindness; the evils of life she bore with a spirit of submission to the will of God; the blessings of life, of which she had a very large share, she enjoyed with glad and grateful feelings; the labors of life she performed with cheerfulness. In the hopes of the Gospel she went to her rest in the summer of 1855.

4. CLARA ALSOP, born July 9, 1828; died at sea, February, 14, 1831.

5. RICHARD ALSOP, born at Valparaiso, Chili, August 8, 1833; died December 12, 1837.

6. FREDERICK AUGUSTUS, born at Valparaiso, Chili, February 26, 1838.

7. HELEN, born at Middletown, Conn., February 10, 1841.

VII. ABIGAIL, born January 23, 1797; married ANSEL CHAPMAN of East Haddam, 1812.

ELNATHAN CHAUNCY.

ELNATHAN CHAUNCY of Durham, the third and youngest son of Rev. Nathaniel and Sarah Judson Chauncy of Durham, was born September 10, 1724. In company with his brother Nathaniel he pursued his studies under his father's instruction, and entered Yale College in 1739, the youngest in his class. On account of the rank of his father, his name stands second in the list of his class, his intimate friend, Nathan Whiting, standing first. He
