Departing from traditional historiography focused on the economic role of resource development, Canada's Victorian Oil Town incorporates an understanding of the connections between science and technology, nation and imperialism, and cultural nuances of community-building. Burr looks at the cultural importance of place and how collective identity was nurtured in the community. She also illustrates how the image of Petrolia as Canada's Victorian Oil Town has been used since the 1970s to develop a thriving tourist industry in the region. Interdisciplinary in scope, Canada's Victorian Oil Town draws from the history of imperialism, science, resource development, local history, gender studies, and cultural geography.

Էջ 81 - January 11, 1862, and before October not less than thirty-five wells had commenced to drain a store-house which provident Nature had occupied untold thousands of years in filling for the uses— not for the amusement— of man. There was no use for the oil at that time. The price had fallen to ten cents per barrel. The unsophisticated settlers of that wild and wooded region seemed inspired by an infatuation. Without an object save the gratification of their curiosity at the unwonted sight of a combustible...
Էջ 58 - It very much resembles pretoleum, being of thick consistence and black colour, and having a strong penetrating odour. The people employ it medicinally ; and I was told, that its external application proved highly beneficial in cases of cramp, rheumatism, and other complaints of a similar kind. In this house there was a woman afflicted with acute rheumatism. She had tried the mineral oil without receiving any benefit from it, and consequently had been induced to put herself into the hands of one of...
Էջ 13 - Halbwachs observes that space is 'a reality that endures', thus we can understand how we recapture the past only by understanding how it is preserved by our physical surroundings ([1926] 1950: 84-8). In The Legendary Topography of the Gospels in the Holy Land, Halbwachs (1941) demonstrates the working of memory. He shows how Jews, Romans, Christians and Muslims rewrote the history of Jerusalem by remodelling the space according to their...

Էջ 57 - There is hardly a clean or a wellploughed field in the western part of the Province; nor has any single acre there, I believe, ever yielded nearly as much produce as it might be made to do under proper management. At one of the houses where I stopped to feed my horse, they showed me a specimen of mineral oil, that is found in considerable quantities upon the surface of the Thames. It flows from an aperture in the bank of the river, and three or four pints can be skimmed off the water daily. It very...

Էջ 75 - By studying the forces now in action, the manner in which they act, and the effects which they are daily producing and the application of the knowledge which these phenomena teach, to the explanation of similar effects from the same producing cause in past formations of the Earth's crust, we shall be able to understand the changes of which these effects are nothing more than faithfully recorded memorials ; and if we can ascertain the relative order of time in which these events have occurred we shall...
