WILLIAM WILBERFORCE, Esq. M.P.

&c. &c. &c.

SIR,

THE honourable manner in which you introduced to the notice of the House of Commons, and of the public, my complaint against the oppressive conduct of the Chamber of Exeter *, is entitled to the warmest returns of gratitude from me. It was not the first time that you stood forth as the undaunted advocate of outraged innocence. The east and the west, the north and the south, have re-echoed your praises, and borne deserved testimony to the benevolence of your heart; and it is to be hoped your strenuous efforts in the vindication of insulted humanity will at last finally triumph. It is to be hoped you will succeed in breaking the staff of oppression, whether wielded in distant lands, by the traffickers in human blood, or usurped, nearer our own home, by those petty corporators, who, as visitors to themselves, cover their own dark deeds with the broad shield of non-responsibility, and advance with effrontery their personal interests, by the sacrifice of all public and private justice.

* The particulars of this proceeding, so peculiarly disgraceful to the Chamber of Ereter, both as trustees and as private individuals, have been published in a pamphlet, called "Petition to the House of Commons, on the Conduct of the Trustees, &c." Sold by Messrs. Cadell and Davies.
