The Colleges marked (*) are under the direction of the Baptists; thus (†) Episcopalians; thus () Methodists; thus (§) Catholics. With respect to the Colleges which are unmarked, the prevailing religious influence of those that are in the New England States is Congregationalism; of most of the others, Presbyterianism. By students in the above table, except a few of the Colleges in the Southern and Western States, is meant undergraduates, or members of the four collegiate classes; not including such as are pursuing professional education, or such as are members of a preparatory department. Some of the Colleges above enumerated are not in full operation; and scarcely deserve a place in the table. The column of Libraries includes the number of volumes in the College Libraries and in the Students' Libraries. Bangor Theol. Seminary, Bangor, Theological Seminary, Divinity School, Harv.
