4 Follow'd thro' ev'ry changing stage,
With goodness all my days,
Deny me not a heart to love,
A tongue to speak thy praise.
5 Ten thoufand thoufand thanks to thee
My grateful lips fhall give;

And, while I make thy grace my trust,
To thee alone I'll live.

6 Ten thousand thousand thanks to thee
Echo along the road;

I

O! may I join thofe endless fongs,
That fill thy blest abode.

BOYCE.

XXIX. Providence myfterious.
G His wonders to perform;
OD moves in a myfterious way,
He plants his footsteps in the fea,
And rides upon the ftorm.

2 Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill

3

He treafures up his bright defigns,
And works his fov'reign will.

Ye fearful faints, fresh courage take,
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and fhall break
In bleffings on your head.

4 Judge not the Lord by feeble fense
But truft him for his grace;
Behind a frowning providence,
He hides a fmiling face.

5 His purposes will ripen faft,
Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,
But fweet will be the flower

6 Blind unbelief is fure to err,

[ocr errors]

And fcan his work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

XXX. Providence myfterious.

REAT God of Providence! thy ways Gre hid from mortal fight;

Wrapt in impenetrable fhade,

Or cloth'd with dazzling light.
2 But in the world of blifs above,
Where thou doft ever reign,
Thy myft'ries fhall be all unveil'd,
And not a doubt remain.

3

The fun of righteoufnefs fhall there
His brightest beams display,
And not a hovering cloud obfcure
That never-ending day.

BEDDOME.

XXXI. God's works of grace.

Let earth reflect the joyful found;
Ye mountains, with the echo ring,
And thout, ye forefts, all around.
2 The Lord his Ifr'el hath redeem'd,
Hath made his mourning people glad ;
And the rich glories of his name
In their falvation hath display'd.
3 Unnumber'd fins, like fable clouds,
Veil'd ev'ry cheerful ray of joy,

And thunders murmur'd thro' the gloom,
While lightnings pointed to destroy.

4 He spoke, and all the clouds difpers'd,
And heav'n unveil'd its fhining face ;

The whole creation fmil'd anew, Deck'd in the golden beams of grace. 5 Ifr'el, return with humble love, Return to thy Redeemer's breast, And charm'd by his melodious voice, Compose thy weary pow'rs to rest.

XXXII. The pardoning God.

I REAT God of wonders! all thy ways
Are matchlefs, Godlike, and divine;
But the fair glories of thy grace
More Godlike and unrival'd shine:
Who is a pard'ning God like thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?
2 Angels and men, refign your claim
To pity, mercy, love and grace;
Thefe glories crown Jehovah's name
With an incomparable blaze.

Who is a pard'ning God like thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?
3 In wonder loft, with trembling joy,
We take the pardon of our God,
Pardon, for crimes of deepest dye,
A pardon, bought with Jefu's blood.
Who is a pard'ning God like thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?
4 O may this ftrange, this matchlefs grace,
This Godlike miracle of love,

Fill the wide earth with grateful praise,
And all th' angelic choirs above!
Who is a pard'ning God like thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?

XXXIII. God glorious and finners faved. IATHER how wide thy glory fhines, How high thy wonders rife!

Known thro' the earth by thousand figns,
By thousands thro' the fkies.

2 Thofe mighty orbs proclaim thy pow'r,
Their motions fpeak thy fkill;
And on the wings of ev'ry hour
We read thy patience ftill.

3 Part of thy name divinely stands
On all thy creatures writ,

4

They fhew the labour of thine hands,
Or imprefs of thy feet.

But when we view thy ftrange defign
To fave rebellious worms,

Where vengeance and compaffion join
In their divineft forms;

Our thoughts are lost in rev'rend awe:
We love and we adore!
The first archangel never faw
So much of God before.

6 Here the whole Deity is known,
Nor dares a creature guefs

Which of the glories brightest shone,

The juftice or the grace.

XXXIV. Univerfal Praife to the Creator.

YE fons of men, his praife difplay,

Who ftamp'd his image on your clay,

And gave it pow'r to move;

Ye that in Judah's confines dwell,
From age to age fucceffive tell

The wonders of his love.

2 Ye angels, that, with loud acclaim,
Admiring view'd the new-born frame,
And hail'd th' Eternal King;
Again, proclaim your Maker's praife;
Again, your thankful voices raife,
And facred anthems fing.

3 Praise him, ye meek and humble train,
Ye faints, whom his decrees ordain
The boundlefs blifs to fhare;
O praife him, till ye take your way
To regions of eternal day,
And reign for ever there.

XXXV. Univerfal Praife.

I DEGIN, my foul, th' exalted lay,
Let each enraptur'd thought obey
And praise th' Almighty's name :
Lo! heaven, and earth, and feas, and skies,
In one-melodious concert rife

To fwell th' infpiring theme.

2 Ye fields of light, celeftial plains, Where gay, tranfporting beauty reigns, Ye fcenes divinely fair,

Your maker's wond'rous pow'r proclaim,
Tell how he form'd your fhining frame,
And breath'd the fluid air.

3 Ye Angels, catch the thrilling found,
While all th' adoring thrones around
His boundlefs mercy fing:
Let every lift'ning saint above
Wake all the tuneful foul of love,
And touch the fweeteft ftring.

4 Let every element rejoice,
Ye thunders burft with awful voice
To him who bids you roll:
