A resolution of the Senate of the 31st ultimo, calling for information respecting the improvement of the roads connected with West Point.

AUGUST 11, 1856.-Read, referred to the Committee on Military Affairs, and ordered to b printed.

WAR DEPARTMENT, Washington, August 8, 1856.

SIR: I have received the resolution of the Senate of the 31st ultimo, directing me to report whether, in my opinion, the public interest requires an improvement of the roads connecting West Point with the interior of the country lying westward thereof, &c., and in reply, I have the honor to state that one of the greatest advantages claimed for West Point as a site for the National Military Academy is its isolation. This advantage would in a great measure be destroyed if communications between it and the neighboring towns were made too

easy.

Although the improvement of the roads referred to might be of some advantage during the winter season in obtaining supplies, &c., I am of the opinion that the best interests of the institution would not be subserved thereby.

Very respectfully, your obedient servant,

Hon. J. D. BRIGHT,

JEFF'N DAVIS,

Secretary of War.

President pro tempore United States Senate.
