us all in one holy bond of perfect peace, and happiness, and love. Hear me, O Lord, and hasten that blessed time; accomplish shortly the number of Thine elect, and give us all grace so to live, that we may be able, with sincerity and truth, to pray and wish for Thy coming. And then come, Lord Jesus, and take us to Thyself, who reignest in heaven with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

PRAYER IN TIME OF PROSPERITY.

O Lord, I praise Thee and bless Thee for the good things which Thou showerest upon me, and all the mercies which I share with others, my creation, preservation, and redemption but especially at this time for the great happiness which I am enjoying. Lord, accept my sacrifice of praise, and fill my heart with gratitude and love, that I may thank Thee by my actions, and not by words

only. But, O Lord, give me grace to fear always, lest the happiness which surrounds me should estrange my heart from Thee. O may my joy not be turned into sorrow, nor my laughter into weeping, by forgetting that I am a stranger and a pilgrim upon earth, and turning away from that better country to which Thou callest me. Lord, give me a humble and contrite spirit, and enable me to tremble at Thy word, so that Thou mayest look upon me with love, and preserve me from all pride, and selfishness, and worldliness. Fill me with compassion for those to whom Thou deniest the blessings which surround me, and who are suffering from pain, and poverty, and misery. Lord, have mercy on them and relieve them; have mercy on me also, that I may not forsake the path that leadeth to life eternal, and enable me to judge myself, that I may not be judged and condemned of Thee. Grant to me the great gifts of repentance and self-knowledge; may I see and abhor my own sins, and resolve henceforth to live only to Thee, O Lord, who didst

give Thy dear Son Jesus Christ to live and die for us, and in whose Name I beseech Thee to hear me, and to grant my prayers. Amen.

PRAYER IN THE PROSPECT OF AN

EXAMINATION.

O Lord, who hast taught us that for every talent which Thou hast given us Thou wilt hereafter demand from us an account, I pray Thee that I may now enter upon the work which Thou hast placed before me, with a sincere desire to carry it on in Thy fear, and as in Thy sight; and that all my faculties may be improved by the studies and discipline to which Thou hast called me. Preserve me,

O Father, from the danger of forgetting Thee in the midst of worldly excitement; keep down all pride of intellect and learning; humble me, and make me ever meek, and kind, and loving, remembering that I must become as a child before I can enter into Thy kingdom. O

I

grant that I may do all things to Thy glory : save me from every approach to dishonesty and unfairness, and give me such success in my pursuits as may most surely enable me to serve Thee faithfully all the days of my life in this world, and may minister to my entrance into everlasting happiness, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

PRAYERS FOR A BIRTHDAY.

[Read the 25th, 34th, 91st, and 103rd Psalms.]

O Lord, I thank Thee for all Thy mercies to me; for having spared me through years of helplessness, and weakness, and sin; for the blessings of health, and strength, and food, and raiment; for my deliverance from pain and sickness; for having given me kind friends, and so much more happiness than I either deserved or should have dared to ask for. Enable me to show forth my thank

fulness, not with my lips only, but with my life, by giving myself up to Thy service. Preserve me from the too great love of earthly things; may I never forget that all these enjoyments must soon pass away from me: may I learn the pleasure of self-sacrifice for Thee; and may every event of my earthly life be turned into a blessing, not to my perishing body, but to my immortal soul. Hear me, O Lord, I beseech Thee, for the sake of Him who died to save us, Thy most dear and blessed Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Phil. ii. 5-11. - Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should
