TO THE READERS OF BENTLEY'S MISCELLAN Y. In commencing a new volume of the Miscellany, the publisher avails herself of the opportunity of pointing out to the subscribers the increased energy with which this periodical is now conducted. In the present number will be found contributions by many celebrated writers-W. H. Ainsworth, Dr. Maginn, Hoffman, Lover and Wade-an array of talent seldom displayed in any other work of a similar nature. Many interesting narratives from the pen of the inimitable "Boz" are likewise in preparation, and will be soon forthcoming in its pages. In addition to the above-named writers, the following are contributors to the Miscellany-Theodore Hook, T. Haynes Bayley, J. Fenimore Cooper, Dr. Millingen, Col. Napier, J. Hamilton Reynolds, William Jerdan, Miss Sheridan, Mrs. Gore, and many others, whose literary fame is well established. It may also be deemed worthy of remark, that though the number of engravings has now been increased to three-thus entailing an additional expense-the price of subscription remains unaltered. The engravings in the original are executed by Cruikshank; and in copying them, the American artist has succeeded in imbibing much of the spirit of that great master. It has been the aim of the publisher that the work should be got up in a style of elegance and correctness not to be surpassed; and no exertions have been spared to redeem the pledges made to the subscribers, who, under these circumstances, would confer a kindness by being equally prompt in fulfilling their part of the contract. Two volumes of the American edition are now completed, and may be had at the publication office. The third volume commences with the present number. Those who have allowed their subscriptions to fall into arrears, will confer a favor by settling their accounts; as it will be impossible to continue to supply copies of the work to delinquent subscribers. |
