INTRODUCTION

IN compiling this short life of Lord Roberts, I am greatly indebted to many books, and to many individuals. Among the former I must specially mention Forty-One Years in India, also the biographies of Lord Roberts by Cairnes and Low, with numberless records, diaries, and histories of the Indian Mutiny and the Afghan campaigns. To the writers of these works I make grateful acknowledgment, as also to those officers whose personal descriptions of events in which they took part have been of the utmost value.

For that portion of the book dealing with South Africa, I received much assistance from Dr. Conan Doyle's History of the War. It was also my good fortune to be in Cape Colony, the Orange River Colony, and the Transvaal during the most critical phases of the campaign, and in summing up my own memories of Lord Roberts during that time, I cannot do better than apply to him the fine words used by Mr. Hewlett in describing his "Richard Yea-and-Nay":
