14 your peace return to you. And whoever shall not re'ceive you, nor hear your words, as ye go out of that 'house or city, shake off the dust from your feet. Verily 'I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment than for 'that city.

'Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of ' wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. And beware of men; for they will deliver you up to high councils, and will scourge you in their synagogues; and ye will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to 'the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, be not over 'careful how or what ye shall say; for what ye shall say 'will be given to you in that hour. For it is not ye that 'speak, but the spirit of your Father that speaketh in 'you. And brother will deliver up brother to death, and 'father his child; and children will rise up against parents, 'and cause them to be put to death. And ye will be 'hated by all for my name; but he that endureth to the 'end will be saved. When they persecute you in this 'city, flee into the other; and if they persecute you out of this, flee into the other; for verily I say to you, ye 'will not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son 'of man be come. The disciple is not above the teacher, 'nor the slave above his lord; it is enough for the disciple 'that he be as his teacher, and the slave as his lord. If 'they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how 'much more his household! Therefore fear them not; 'for there is nothing covered which will not be uncovered, and hid which will not be known. What I tell you in 'the dark, speak ye in the light; and what ye hear in the ear, preach ye upon the house tops. And fear not them 'that kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but 'rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for an 'Assarion [or farthing] ? and not one of them shall fall to 30 the ground without your Father. And even the hairs of 31 'your head are all numbered. Therefore fear not; for ye 32 are worth more than many sparrows. Whoever there

'fore shall acknowledge me before men, him will I also acknowledge before my Father that is in heaven. But 33 'whoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny 'before my Father that is in heaven. Think not that I 34 am come to send peace unto the earth; I came not to 'send peace, but the sword. For I came to set man 35 against his father, and daughter against her mother, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man's 36 'foes will be his own household. He that loveth father or 37 'mother above me, is not worthy of me; and he that 'loveth son or daughter above me, is not worthy of me. 'And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, 'is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life will lose 39 'it; and he that loseth his life for my sake will find it. 'He that receiveth you receiveth me; and he that re- 40 'ceiveth me receiveth Him that sent me. He that 41 'receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, will 'receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a 'righteous man in the name of a righteous man, will "receive a righteous man's reward. And whoever shall 'give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto 'you, he will not lose his reward.'

And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

And when John heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him; 'Art thou he that is to come, or are we to look for ' another?' And Jesus answered and said unto them; 'Go and tell John what things ye hear and see; the 'blind receive sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and 'the poor have good tidings preached to them; and 'blessed is he who shall not stumble at me.' And when these were gone, Jesus began to say unto the crowds concerning John; What went ye out into the desert for to 'see? a reed shaken by the wind? But what went ye out for to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, 'they that wear soft raiment are in kings' houses. But

'what went ye out for to see? a prophet? Yea, I say 10 'unto you, and a greater than a prophet; for this is he of 'whom it is written; Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. Verily ‘I say unto you, among those that are born of women, there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist; 'but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than 'he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now, 'the kingdom of heaven is forced, and the violent seize it. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, he is Elijah who was to come. 15 16' He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. But unto 'what shall I liken this generation? It is like children

sitting in the markets, and calling unto their com17 panions, and saying; We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye 'have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor 'drinking; and they say; He hath a demon. The Son 'of man came eating and drinking; and they say; Be'hold, a glutton and a wine-bibber, a friend of tax'gatherers and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her 'children.' Then he began to upbraid the cities in which most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not; 'Alas for thee, Chorazin! alas for thee, Bethsaida! 'for if the mighty works which have been done in 'had been done in Tyre and in Sidon, they had long ago 22 'repented in sackcloth and ashes. Moreover I say unto 'you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, 'that art raised unto heaven, wilt be brought down unto 'hell; for if the mighty works that have been done in 'thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained 24 until this day. Moreover I say to you, that it will be 'more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judg'ment, than for thee.'

you

At that time Jesus spake and said; 'I thank thee, 'O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast 'hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast ‘revealed them unto babes. Yea, Father, for thus it was 27 'well pleasing in thy sight. All things are delivered to

26

'me by my Father; and no one knoweth the son, but the Father; nor doth any one know the Father, but the son, 'and he to whom the son wisheth to reveal him. Come 28 unto me all ye that labour and are burdened, and I will

'

'give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of 29 me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye will find

' rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden 30 'light.'

At that time Jesus went on the sabbath through the corn fields; and his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. And the Pharisees seeing, said unto him; Behold, thy disciples are doing 'what is not lawful to do on a sabbath.' But he said unto them; 'Have ye not read what David did when he was hungry, and they that were with him; how he entered 'into the house of God, and ate the shew-bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for them that were 'with him, but for the priests alone? Or have ye not 'read in the law, that on the sabbath the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? But I say to you, that one greater than the temple is here. But 'if ye had known what this is; I wish for mercy, and not 'for sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the blameless. For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.'

And when he had gone thence he went into their synagogue; and behold, there was a man that had a withered hand. And they questioned him, saying; 'Is 'it lawful to heal on the sabbath?' that they might accuse him. And he said unto them; 'What man shall 11 'there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath, will he not lay hold of it

' and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a 12 sheep! So it is lawful to do right on the sabbath.' Then saith he to the man; 'Stretch out thine hand.' 13 And he stretched it out; and it was restored whole like the other. And the Pharisees went out, and took counsel 14 against him, how they should destroy him. But Jesus 15 knowing it, withdrew from thence; and great crowds followed him; and he healed them all, and charged them 16 that they should not make him known; so that it might 17

be fulfilled that was spoken through the prophet Isaiah, 18 saying; Behold, my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my spirit on him, and he shall proclaim judgment to the Gen19 tiles. He will not strive nor cry out, nor will any one hear 20 his voice in the open squares. A bruised reed will he not break, and smoking flax will he not quench, till he hath 21 sent forth judgment unto victory. And in his name will the Gentiles hope.

Then was brought to him a demoniac, blind and dumb; and he healed him, so that the blind and dumb man both 23 spake and saw. And all the crowds were amazed, and said; Is this the son of David?' And when the 24 Pharisees heard it, they said; This man doth not cast 'out demons, unless by Beelzebub the prince of the ' demons.' And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them; Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, ' and no city or house divided against itself will stand; 'and if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; 27 'how then will his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelze'bub cast out demons, by whom do your children cast 'them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if 'I by the spirit of God cast out demons, then the kingdom of God is come upon you. Or how can any one ' enter into a strong man's house, and plunder his goods, 'unless he first bind the strong man? and then he will 30 'plunder his house. He that is not with me is against 31 'me; and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth. There'fore I say unto you, that all sin and blasphemy will 'be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy of the spirit 32 will not be forgiven to men. And whoever speaketh a 'word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven him; 'but whoever speaketh against the holy spirit, it will not ⚫be forgiven him, neither in this age nor in that to come. 33 Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make 'the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by 34 'the fruit. O offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, 'speak good things? for out of the overflow of the heart 'the mouth speaketh. The good man out of his good 'treasure bringeth forth good things; and the evil man
