'their's is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when 'men shall revile you, and persecute you, and say every 12 'evil word against you falsely for my sake; rejoice and 'be glad, for great is your reward in heaven: for so per'secuted they the prophets that were before you.

13 'Ye are the salt of the earth; and if the salt have lost 'its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thence'forth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be 14 'trodden on by men. Ye are the light of the world. A 15 city set on a hill cannot be hid; neither do men light a 'lamp and put it under the bushel, but on the lampstand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house; so let your light shine before men; that they may see your 'good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

'Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the 18 'prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass away, 'not one Jot [the smallest of the letters] or one tip of a 'letter shall pass away from the law, till all things come 'to pass. Whoever therefore shall break one of the least 'of these commands, and shall teach men so, he will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever shall 'do and teach them, he will be called great in the king'dom of heaven. For I say unto you, that unless your 'righteousness shall exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, 'ye will not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have 'heard that it was said to them of old; Thou shalt not kill; and whoever shall kill, will be deserving of the judg'ment. But I say unto you, that every one that is angry 'with his brother without a cause, will be liable to the 'judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, [or Fool,] will be liable to the high council; and whoever shall say, Moreh [or Apostate] will be liable to the Gehenna of fire. If therefore thou bring thy gift to the 'altar, and there remember that thy brother hath ought 24 against thee, leave there thy gift before the altar, and go, 'first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and 'offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whilst 'thou art on the way with him; lest the adversary deliver 'thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer,

and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say to thee, thou 26 'wilt not come out thence till thou hast paid the last farthing. Ye have heard that it was said; Thou shalt not 27 commit adultery; but I say unto you, that every man, 28 that looketh at a woman to lust after her, hath already 'committed adultery with her in his heart. And if thy 29 'right eye maketh thee sin, pluck it out, and cast it from 'thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy limbs should 'perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into Gehenna. And if thy right hand maketh thee sin, cut it 30 off, and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy limbs should perish, and not that thy whole 'body should be cast into Gehenna. And it was said; 31 Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement; but I say unto you, whoever 32 shall put away his wife, unless for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery; and whoever

shall marry her that hath been put away, committeth 'adultery. Again, ye have heard that it was said to them 38 of old; Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths; but I say

34

unto you, swear not at all; neither by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is a footstool for his 35 'feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the great King's city. 'Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not 36 'make one hair white or black. But let your word be; 37 'yea, yea; nay, nay; for what is more than these cometh

of evil. Ye have heard that it was said; An eye for an

38

eye, and a tooth for a tooth; but I say unto you, resist 39 'not evil; but whoever shall smite thee on thy right 'cheek, turn to him the other also; and let him that 40 'wisheth to have judgment against thee, and to take thy 'coat, let him have thy cloak also; and whoever shall 41 'force thee to go one mile, go with him twain. Give to 42 'him that asketh thee, and him that would borrow of

'thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it was 43 'said; Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy; but I say unto you, love your enemies; bless them that 44 curse you; do good to them that hate you; and pray for 'them that reproach you and persecute you; so that ye 45

'may be sons of your Father that is in heaven; for he 'maketh his sun to rise on the wicked and on the good, 'and sendeth rain on the righteous and on the un46 'righteous. For if ye should love them that love you, 'what reward have ye? Do not even the tax-gatherers 47 the same? And if ye should salute your brethren only, 'what great thing do ye? Do not even the Heathen so? 'Be ye therefore perfect, as your Father that is in heaven 'is perfect. Take heed that ye do not your acts of 'righteousness before men to be seen by them; otherwise 'ye have no reward with your Father that is in heaven. Therefore, when thou givest alms, do not sound a trum'pet before thee as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. 3 'Verily I say to you, they have their reward. But when

'thou givest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy 4 'right hand doeth; so that thine alms may be in secret; ' and thy Father who seeth in secret will himself reward 5 'thee openly. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be 'as the hypocrites; for they love to pray standing in the 'synagogues and in the corners of the open squares, that they may be seen by men. Verily I say unto you, they 6 have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter 'into thy closet, and after shutting thy door, pray to thy 'Father that is in secret; and thy Father who seeth in 7 'secret will reward thee openly. And when ye pray, 'babble not as the Heathen do; for they think that in 8 their much speaking they will be heard. Be ye not 'therefore like unto them; for your Father knoweth what 9 'things ye have need of before ye ask him. Thus, there'fore, pray ye; Our Father that art in heaven, hallowed 'be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on 'earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily 12 'bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our 'debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us 14 from evil. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your 15 'heavenly Father will also forgive you; and if ye forgive

'not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive 16 'your trespasses. And when ye fast, be not as the hypo'crites, of a sad face; for they disfigure their faces that

they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say to you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, 17 'anoint thy head, and wash thy face; so that thou appear 'not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father that is in 'secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret will reward thee. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, 19 where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in 20 'heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where

thieves break not through nor steal. For where your 21 treasure is, there will your heart be also. The lamp of 22 'the body is the eye; if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body will be in the light; but if thine eye be evil, 23 'thy whole body will be in darkness. If therefore the 'light that is in thee be darkness, how great will be the darkness! No one can serve two masters; for either he 24 I will hate the one and love the other; or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon. Therefore I say unto you, be not over 'careful for your life, what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is 'not life more than food, and the body than raiment ? 'Look at the fowls of the air, they sow not, nor reap, nor 26 'gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them; are ye not better than they? Which of you by 27 'being over careful can add one cubit's measure to his 'length of life? And why are ye over careful for rai- 28 'ment? Consider the lilies of the field how they grow; 'they toil not, nor spin; and I say unto you, that not 29 'Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of these. 'If then God so clothe the grass of the field, which to 30 day is, and to morrow is cast into a furnace, will he not 'much more clothe you, ye of little faith? Therefore be 31 'not over careful, saying, What shall we eat? or, What 'shall we drink? or, What shall we put on? For after 32 all these things the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly 'Father knoweth that ye have need of all these. But seek 33 'first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all

these things will be added unto you. Therefore be not 34 over careful for the morrow; for the morrow will be over

'careful for the things of itself. Enough for the day is 'the evil thereof.

12 'Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what 'judgment ye judge, ye will be judged; and with 'what measure ye measure, it will be measured to 3 'you. And why seest thou the chaff that is in thy 'brother's eye, but perceivest not the splinter that is 4 in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, 'Let me take the chaff out of thine eye; and behold, the 5 splinter is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first take 'the splinter out of thine own eye, and then thou wilt see 6 clearly to take the chaff out of thy brother's eye. Give 'not what is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls 'before swine; lest they trample them under their feet, ‘and turn and rend you. Ask, and it will be given to 'you; seek, and ye will find; knock, and it will be 8 opened unto you; for every one that asketh receiveth; 'and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh 'it will be opened. Or what man is there of you, who, 10 'if his son ask for bread, will give him a stone? and if he 11 'ask for a fish, will give him a serpent? If then ye, 'being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, 'how much more will your Father that is in heaven give 12 'good things to them that ask him! Therefore all things 'whatever ye wish that men should do to you, do ye even 'so to them; for this is the law and the prophets. Enter 'ye through the small gate; for wide is the gate, and 'broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many 'there are that enter through it. How small is the gate, ' and narrow is the way that leadeth unto life! and few 'there are that find it. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are raven16 'ing wolves. By their fruits ye will know them. Do men gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles ? So 'every good tree beareth good fruit; and the bad tree 'beareth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bear evil fruit, 19 'nor a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree not bearing 20 "good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. There21 'fore by their fruits ye will know them. Not every one
