BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS In 1789, the Secretary of War is responsible for issues relating to Indian Affairs. In 1832, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs was established within the War Department. In 1849, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs was transferred to the newly created Department of Interior. BUREAU OF RECLAMATION In 1902, the authority of Reclamation was held within the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). In 1907, it was created as a separate service within the Department of the Interior.
