ADMISSION OF STATES TO THE UNION

Thirty States have been created out of land originally within the public domain. The following is a list of States created after establishment of the Committee, the date of their admission into the Union, and a list of where lands were obtained.

What is now the state of Maine was, before statehood, called the District of Maine and belonged to Massachusetts

Was an independent republic before statehood.

Ceded by Mexico by the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, concluded February 2, 1848, and proclaimed July 4, 1848. From then until statehood, California had a military government until December 20, 1849, and then a local civil government. It never had a territorial form of government.

Included in the territory of the original 13 States. (Additional lands acquired under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803)

Included in the Oregon Territory, title to which was established in 1846.

Louisiana Purchase in 1808, but including additional land, title to which was quieted through treat with Spain, in 1819, with other lands annexed with Texas in 1845, and lands ceded by Mexico in 1848.

Was part of Dakota Territory before Statehood. Admitted on same day as South Dakota. Included in the territory of the original 13 States. (Additional lands acquired under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803)

Was part of Dakota Territory before Statehood. Admitted on same day as North Dakota. Included in the territory of the original 13 States. (Additional lands acquired under the Louisiana Purchase in 1803)

Acquired in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and with the Oregon Territory, title to which established in 1846.

Puerto Rico July 25, 1952

Philippine Organic Act of 1902 extended protections of US Bill of Rights to Phillipinos. Became independent country July 4, 1946.

A constitution made Puerto Rico an autonomous part of United States called Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico.
