OUR ARMY WORK.

1. SHORNCLIFFE.-From the Rev. Joseph Webster. August 31st, 1865.-The bazaar in aid of the building of Folkestone chapel has just closed. The soldiers at the camp assisted us nobly. Their work and articles sold at high prices, and all was eagerly bought up. Among the rest were many mementos of the Indian mutiny, contributed by men who were engaged in that momentous struggle: leaves from the grave of Havelock, a piece of the Ballie-guard gate, through which our troops made good their entrance into Lucknow, were presented; as also Bhootan war knives, curiosities from China, and beautiful specimens of needlework. It is needless to add that this display of the liberality of our soldiers was as gratifying as it was admirable.

2. PORTSMOUTH.-From the Rev. B. Broadley-September12th, 1865.-I am glad to be able to report favourably of my work. From returns sent to me, I find we have on this side the water upwards of two hundred and thirty men in attendance on our services. This is exclusive of a small corps stationed at Fort Hilsea, the men of which, about twenty in number, attend the Landport chapel. I called on the general, and was received with the usual courtesy. I have also called on the commandants of the corps from which we have the largest number attending, and by them also have been received kindly. One of them, the colonel of the Royal Marine Artillery, whose corps occupy barracks

distant about two and a half miles from the town, has placed a room at my disposal for week-evening service. We commence to-night; and, in connexion with it, I hope to be able to form a Society-class.

3. PARKHURST, ISLE OF WIGHT.From the Rev. W. Moister.-September 11th, 1865.-I am happy to inform you of the favourable commencement of our army work at Parkhurst Garrison. On the arrival of my authorization from the War Office and Horse Guards, the commanding officer sent for me, and gave me a cordial welcome as the duly appointed Wesleyan chaplain. In reply to a request which I had previously made, he readily granted us the use of a school-room for parade services on Sundays, and also on one evening in the VOL. XI.-FIFTH SERIES.

To

week for a Bible-class, &c. We have obtained the use of one school-room in Newport for soldiers' prayer and class meetings; so that I have now got fairly into my work, and I am encouraged by the attendance and marked attention at our parade services, as well as by the greater numbers present at our voluntary meetings, and by my visits to the hospital. Ten of our men have recently embarked for Canada. secure due care of them, I wrote to the Ministers of the place to which they proceeded. It is a somewhat remarkable circumstance, that one of the Ministers to whom I have commended these men, was, when I first knew him, a boy in the army. He was converted to God on one of my West-India stations. He began to preach; studied under my direction; obtained his discharge; and has for more than twenty years been an eminent Minister in Canada. He, I am sure, will take care of our men from Parkhurst.

4. THE CAMP AT THE CURRAGH, AND DUBLIN.-I have recently had an opportunity of visiting the camp at the Curragh in Ireland, and of inquiring into and observing there, and in Dublin, the state of our work among the troops stationed in that part of the United Kingdom. The camp is delightfully situated, and the wide expanse of short grass and soft greensward makes it highly advantageous for military evolutions on a large scale; and health seems breathed in with every inspiration. I found hussars and artillery under canvas, and the men every where well occupied. It was pleasant to see the smiles which greeted the appearance of the Rev. Messrs. Patterson and Lough, the late and present chaplains of the Wesleyan soldiers, and the respect shown to them as we passed through the camp. Our church and Minister's residence are picturesque, well adapted to their purpose, and stand in a good situation, with a garden and field adjoining. This is held of the Crown, upon easy terms of acknowledg ment. When the camp has been full, the church, which holds more than four hundred, has been found too small, and two parade services have been held in it on Sunday forenoons; and a pleasant sight it is to see the men marching from different parts of the wide-spread lines of huts, in separate bodies, and converg
