GOD'S

CREA

GLORY IN HIS WORLD AND TURES, AND ABOVE ALL IN MAN. (VIII.)

Psalm 8.

After the Gittite manner. A

For the Chief Musician.

Psalm of David.

Probably the earliest of David's Psalms.

CHRIST MAGNIfies the FathER, THE LORD OF HEAVEN

AND EARTH.

I O LORD our Lord.

Verse 9.

2 Christ repeated these words when the children were crying "Hosanna" in the Temple-"Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?" S. Mat. 21:16. Jesus having given the Seventy authority "over all the power of the enemy," "rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes " S. Lu. 10:19, 21. "God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty "I Cor. 1:27.

3 Lit. When I see thy heavens, the works of thy fingers.

15 An abrupt change of subject. The pronoun "he" refers to David's enemy. Ungodliness, K. J., falsehood. 16 Graven, i. e. hollowed out like a grave. 17 Wickedness, K. J., violent dealing. Pate, lit. top, crown of the head.

Ps. VII. Title, compare Pss. 81, 84. After the Gittite manner, or manner of Gath; i. e. some measure or style of music which had been borrowed from the Philistines. 2 Collect for Holy Innocents' Day.. Ordained, K J. (marg.) founded. Avenger, lit. the revengeful man. "David's stripling combat with Goliath may be the historical basis of this verse. ."-Thrupp.

6 Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet;

7 All sheep and

oxen: yea, and the beasts of the field;

8 The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea: and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the

seas.

9 O LORD our Governor: how excellent is thy Name in all the world!

Prop. Ps. Asc. M. Am. P. B. in Sel. IX. Int. Christmas 2d Comm. Rom., Asc., Michaelmas, All Saints, Days Martyrs; v. 1, Trin.; vv. 1, 2, Holy Innocents. P. V. Hy. 517. See p. x.

PSALM IX. Confitebor tibi (Domine, in toto corde meo: narrabo).

8:6 111:1 I WILL give thanks unto thee, O LORD, with my whole heart: I will speak of all thy marvellous works.

Ps. IX. Title. "Death of the Son" (Heb. Muth-labben) may be the name of a melody. There is in the Heb. an alphabetical arrangement begun in this psalm, which with some irregularities is completed in the next. The letters of the alphabet follow each other at irregular intervals at the beginning of verses.

4-6 These words are repeated of Christ in Heb. 2:6-8, where the first part of v. 6 of the psalm is thus given,66 And didst set him over the works of thy hands."

4 Lit. What is mortal man, that thou shouldest be mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou shouldest visit him? "What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him? and that thou shouldest visit him every morning?" Job. 7:17, 18.

"We see

5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man Heb. 2:9.

6 Lit. Thou hast made him to have dominion over the works of thy hands. "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth Gen. 1:28. For he hath put all things under his feet" 1 Cor. 15:27.

7 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever" Rev. 5:13.

8 Jesus said to Peter,-"Go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up" S. Mat. 17:27.

9 Verse 1.

8-9 "The bird, free burgess of the air,
The fish, of sea the native heir;

And what things else of water traceth
The unworn paths, His rule embraceth.

O Lord, that rul'st our mortal line,

How through the world Thy Name doth shine."

Sir Philip Sidney.

PSALMS OF JUDGMENT UPON THE WICKED.

(IX-XIV.)

PSALM 9.

For the Chief Musician. To "The Death of the Son." A Psalm of David.

Associated with the vietory over Goliath, but written after David was made king.

Thanksgiving for God's righteous judgment of the nations. CHRIST IS BOTH THE MEEK AND PATIENT MAN, AND THE RIGHTEOus Judge.

4 What is man; the Heb. word here used signifies man in his weakness and frailty. 5 Worship. See Ps. 3:3, n. 6-7 David "in his own person had exercised dominion alike over the sheep that submitted to his authority, over the beast of the field that resisted it, and over the bestial avenger that defied it."-Thrupp. 8 "We behold in Him the Lord of nature, able by the secret yet mighty magic of His will to guide and draw the unconscious creatures, and make them minister to the higher interests of His kingdom; we recognize in Him the ideal man, the second Adam, in whom are fulfilled the words of the Psalmist."-Abp. Trench on S. Lu, 5:4-6. See S. Jo. 21:6.
