MARK I.

25 Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, 35 26 and come out of him. And when

the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came 27 out of him. And they were all 36 amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean 28 spirits, and they do obey him. And 37 immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

And forthwith, when 38
they were come out of
the synagogue, they

of Simon and Andrew,
with James and John.
But Simon's wife's mo-

and anon they tell him

hand, and lifted her
up; and immediately
the fever left her, and

And all the city was

the door. And he
healed many that were

and cast out many
devils; and suffered
not the devils to

LUKE IV. 38-41.

And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house.

And Simon's wife's' mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. Now when the sun was setting,2 all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak:* for they knew that he was Christ.

$32. JESUS WITH HIS DISCIPLES GOES FROM CAPERNAUM THROUGHOUT GALILEE.

MARK I. 35-39.

And in the morning, rising up a 42 great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, 36 and there prayed. And Simon and they that were with him followed 37 after him. And when they had 43 found him, they said unto him, All 38 men seek for thee. And he said unto them, Let us go into the next 44 towns, that I may preach there also for therefore came I forth. 39 And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

LUKE IV. 42-44.

And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

MATT. IV. 23-25.

23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness 24 and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he 25 healed them. And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan. [Matt. ch. 5. in § 41.]

scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.1

Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?

there, and reasoning in 7 their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God 8 only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether 23 is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins,2 (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy 25 way into thine house. What reason ye in your hearts?

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins,2 (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thine house. OUR LORD'S SECOND PASSOVER, AND THE SUBSEQUENT
TRANSACTIONS UNTIL THE THIRD.

TIME: One year.

§ 36. THE POOL OF BETHESDA; THE HEALING OF THE INFIRM MAN; AND OUR LORD'S SUBSEQUENT DISCOURSE.-Jerusalem.

JOHN V. 1-47.

1 AFTER this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusa2 lem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called 3 in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving 4 of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the 5 water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in 7 that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8, 9 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: 11 it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He_that 12 made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up bed, and walk. Then

asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, 13 and walk? And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

14

Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, 15 thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him 16 whole. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.*

1 That this feast of the Jews was our Lord's second passover, is shown in the Note to this section in the Appendix.

2 Bethesda (place of mercy) was near the sheep gate (see Neh. 3. 1, 32; 12. 39) and not market, and hence it must have been on the north-east side of the temple. It is perhaps

the same as the pool Amygdalon of Josephus
(Bel. Jud. 5. 11. 4.), which lay on the north side
of the old town, and which was possibly so named
(from God's boon, which is in effect the
same as Bethesda) in reference to the cures ef-
fected in it. See Wieseler, p. 259.
