whether entire or partial; excepting only the first edition of Paradise Lost, which was
divided into ten books instead of twelve, as at present.

The explanation of the letters and figures used in this Index is as follows:-The figures
i. ii. iii. &c. (printed in lower-case Roman) refer to the respective books of Paradise Lost
and Paradise Regained. The figures 1, 2, 3, &c. (printed in Arabic numerals) refer to
the lines of each book, or of each poem, according to their several descriptions.
