And when his disciples were come 14 to the other side, they had forgotten 6 to take bread. Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware 15 of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

1 Dalmanutha was, probably, the name of the district in which the town of Magdala lay, on the west of Lake Tiberias (see Wieseler, p. 312). To this town Mary Magdalene belonged, as her name signifies.

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not?

3 There shall no sign be given: meaning such a sign as they desired, i. e. one from heaven, and of a most public character; for we see in Matthew that a sign on the earth, bearing analogy to the miraculous preservation of Jonah, should be given. Comp. Luke 12. 1.

§ 72. A BLIND MAN HEALED,3— Bethsaida (Julias).
MARK VIII. 22-26.

And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, 23 and besought him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand,

and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put 24 his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw aught. And he looked up, 25 and said, I see men as trees, walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every 26 man clearly. And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

MATT. XVI. 13-20.

When Jesus came 27 into the coasts of Cæsarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John 28 the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the 15 prophets. He saith un- 29 to them, But whom say 16 ye that I am? And

Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the 17 living God. And Jesus answered and said

LUKE IX. 18-21. And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

MATT. XVI. 21-28. From that time forth 31 began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22 Then Peter took him,

and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far 33 from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23 But he turned, and said

MARK VIII. 31-38. IX. 1.

And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suf

fer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan : for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

And when he had 23 called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them,

Christ is the only real foundation and support of the church (see 1 Cor. 3. 11; Acts 4. 11, 12), but yet the apostles also are said (see Eph. 2. 20) to be the foundation; i. e. the commencement of the building rather than its support. MARK VIII.

25

Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow 35 me. For whosoever 24 will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?3 Whosoever therefore 26 shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. For who

soever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.' For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, 2 or be cast away?

For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.

But I tell you of a truth, there be some 5 standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias not knowing what he said.
