MILITARY.

To the Secretary of the Michigan State Agricultural Society:

SILAS HILES,

JOHN STRONG, JR.,
GEO. C. MUNRO,

Awarding Committee.

The undersigned, who were appointed a committee to inspect the drill and award the premiums to the military companies for drill and soldierly bearing, respectfully report that the following companies reported to compete for the several prizes, viz. :

"Coldwater Light Guards" of Coldwater, Mich.

"Port Huron Light Guards" of Port Huron, Mich.

"East Saginaw Rifles" of East Saginaw, Mich.

There being less than eight companies competing for the prizes, under the instructions, we could award premiums for only the first, third, and fourth prizes.

We cannot but congratulate the State upon the perfection in drill and the soldierly bearing of her volunteer soldiers.

All the companies did well, considering the brief time they have been organized, and good evidence of the appreciation of the duties of a soldier; but the difference in the perfection of drill of the several companies were so great that your committee had no difficulty in making the awards of premiums, and made them as follows, viz. :

To the military company showing the most perfect drill and soldierly bearing:

To first best, "Coldwater Light Guards," $200.

To third best, "East Saginaw Rifles," $100.
To fourth best, "Port Huron Guards," $50.
Respectfully submitted.

J. G. PARKHURST,
WM. B. MCCREERY,
MICHAEL SHOEMAKER,
Committee

BASE-BALL.

To the officers of the Michigan State Agricultural Society:

I would respectfully report to you that in the base-ball tournament the "Mutual Baseball Club" of Jackson wins the first prize in the senior class, the prize of $100 and gold medal, and the "Ogemas" of Flint the second prize in the same class, the prize of $50.

In the junior class the "Foresters" of Charlotte win the first prize, the prize of $75 and a silver niedal, and the "Dominos" of Pontiac the second prize in the same class, prize $35.

T. J. CONLEY,
Chairman Committee,

REPORTS FROM COUNTY SOCIETIES.

BARRY COUNTY.

The year 1874 has not been a very favorable one to farming interests in this county. The season has been one of unusual drought, extending from May to December, with only an occasional shower. Wheat has suffered less from this cause than most other crops, and may be considered an average one,—indeed more than average, excepting upon rolling clay soils, where it was killed by the frosts of winter; and the price has fallen below the expectations of producers. All crops excepting wheat were very light. Oats, which promised well until nearly ripe, were dwarfed and shrunken by the drought. Corn was scarcely half a crop. Early Rose potatoes, which ripened in July, were very fair, but all later varieties, which are the main dependence for the year's supply, averaged very light. A large area planted partly compensates for the small yield. The Colorado beetle put in an appearance, but were not allowed to damage the crop to any great extent. Our farmers can successfully combat these pests, but a lack of rain is not easily remedied.

Fruits were generally a fair yield, although the curculio and codling moth, having the advantage of dry, hot weather, were unusually destructive, and as a consequence plums were scarce, and the otherwise fine apple crop was materially damaged. It is becoming more and more apparent that the best methods of destruction must be employed against these pests, or our most valuable fruits be abandoned to them entirely.

Our Agricultural Society held its twenty-second annual fair Sept. 30th and Oct. 1st and 2d. The exhibition was in nearly all respects successful. Fine horses, fine cattle, fine fruits, a good display of things useful and ornamental, and a large attendance is the general summing up for this year. The interest in sheep is waning, and fruits are dependent upon the elements, and the departments for these were the only ones that did not maintain their usual standing.

The entries were over one hundred in number, and the premiums awarded amounted to $532. The society numbers 780 members. The receipts of the fair foot up at $1,535. The society has good grounds and buildings, a half-mile track, and is in debt $200, not yet due.

The officers elected for 1875 are: President, Thomas Altoft; Secretary, J. M. Nevins; Treasurer, D. G. Robinson; Directors, S. J. Bidelman, A. B. Pennock, John Dawson, Burton King, and Henry Houghtalin.

J. M. NEVINS, Secretary.
