Faragher examines the settlers of a small section of rural Illinois, the first generation of a midwestern community, in the six decades before the Civil War. My interest in this book stems from my mother's family who lived in a community very much like Sugar Creek. I've used this book in my genealogical studies. The book has helped me to understand the type of community that my ggg-grandfather's family would have been a part of. ( )
